My grandfather bought my father a partnership with a grocer who was setting up a shop in Hertfordshire. The man’s wife had banked all the takings from the shop in her husband’s name. My father lost all his money, and his father’s money. He became the black sheep of the family.

My mother had a baby which she lost and she became ill. The doctor advised moving. Father and mother were friendly with Monsignor Benson who knew Father Gray of St Peter’s Church in Edinburgh. The Monsignor  recommended my father for the Sacrosanct of St Peter’s Church and the janitor to St Peter’s School. Mother and father moved into a house attached to the church.
