There were allotments across the road at Falcon Avenue, my father had one. He had a shed and we used to go and play in there. We didn’t have a bathroom at Falcon Avenue. We had a big tin bath that my father would bring through to the fire.

You could get a rabbit for sixpence. That would do a whole family. My mother stewed it. My father always made us all clean our plates. I still remember having to eat the fat from the meat. It was terrible.
