We used to get the train from Morningside Station to Portobello. It was threepence return and three ha’pence for the children. On a Saturday we used to go for a picnic on the beach. You got a pot of tea for tuppence. They gave it to you in a teapot and milk and sugar. We used to get these Scotch pies and they were tuppence. We used to bathe. My father used to dig a hole in the sand and make a seat in it for all of us. It was lovely.
On a Sunday we used to be given fourpence to spend on sweets and we’d go to Cafferty’s. In the afternoon we always went for a walk and we’d eat the sweets, usually bars of chocolate.
