The Three and Sixpenny Doctor, 60th Anniversary of the NHS
2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the formation of the National Health Service.
The idea for this exhibition came about
because of this landmark in British health care. In this project we
have spoken to people about their experiences and memories of
life before the NHS., and its early years. In this way we hope the
exhibition gives some context and perspective to the health
service we now have.
We have taken this exhibition round several libraries in Edinburgh including the Central Library on George IV Bridge and Leith Library on Ferry Road. Now we have created an interactive virtual online gallery that you can browse round almost as though you were walking round a real exhibition hall. We hope you enjoy this new way of presenting our work and find the exhibition of great interest.
To access the gallery you will first need a special VRML player to display it and unfortunately you really need to have a broadband connection. But don't worry, we have started adding the exhibition panels as normal accessible web pages so nobody will miss out on the content. Just click on the links at the top and bottom of the pages.
If you are running Windows the best player is called Cosmo and you can install Cosmo by clicking here. ( Choose "Run" when asked, then follow the installation instructions. ) This works with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. ( If you have problems please click here for more detailed installation instructions. )
If you have a Mac or are running Linux, then download Octaga player. Octaga
can be downloaded and installed from here.
Getting Around
Moving around the gallery is easy. You can use the keyboard and/or the mouse, here I'll tell you how to use the keyboard, which is probably the easiest method.
Use the arrow keys to move forward, back, and turn left and right. You can also "fly" up and down by holding down the alt key while using the forward and back keys. Using the alt key also lets you slide left and right; this can sometimes be easier than turning, moving and turning back again. If you hold down the shift key you move faster.
That's the basics, if you want to know more about moving around the world and using the on screen controls there is detailed help if you click on the "?" just beside the word Cosmo at the bottom right of the gallery window.
Again, we hope you find the gallery interesting.
