A Century of Change:Memories and Experiences of Volunteer
Work
'A Century of Change' is a celebration of volunteering by Edinburgh people over the last one hundred years. It looks at just a very small selection of the incredibly varied work that volunteers have carried out.
It has been a joint project between the Living Memory Association, Volunteer Centre Edinburgh and City of Edinburgh Museums and has been generously supported by the heritage Lottery Fund.
The exhibition was launched on November 3rd at The Museum of Edinburgh
and will run until June 2007. The book has also been published
and distributed to all participants. Edinburgh Volunteer Centre received
half of the copies. We had a great article in the Evening News enthusing
about the exhibition. Two MSPs attended the
exhibition launch; Sarah Boyack and Lord James Douglas Hamilton.
Also, Sarah Boyack, Central Edinburgh MSP, brought the project and
the exhibition to the attention of The Scottish Parliament on 17th November
2006. She commented in her motion; ‘This exhibition notes the importance
of volunteer contributions to enriching the lives of the people of Edinburgh
and the Lothians over the last century.’
One of the most rewarding outcomes of the project was exploring the wide variety of work done by volunteers. Volunteering covers such a cross section of people, both background and age. People give their time freely to help out in just about every part of our society and we are all helped in some way by people who volunteer. We feel it has been important to record and celebrate this often neglected work.
The 50 interviews that we recorded will be stored at City of Edinburgh
Museum archive. The 16 panel exhibition, with artefacts relating to the
history of volunteering, will be on display at The Museum of Edinburgh
until the end of June 2007.
Over the next two pages you can see a sample of the panels from the exhibition. We also have sound bites of the interviews with Steve Fullarton and Jenny Galawyn
Thanks to Miles, Joyce, Catriona and everyone involved in the project.
