WELCOME

As subscribers will be aware, the LMA continues to develop and extend.

Children having a picnic beside a carAt the AGM which was held at Leith Library on May 7th, 2003 it was resolved by the Management Committee that “the assets, activities and liabilities of the Association be transferred to a new company to be incorporated with the name of ‘The Living Memory Association’". The new Company, limited by guarantee, was registered, after being recognised as a charity by the Inland Revenue.

It was agreed that the name ‘member’ should apply only to those who wish to take an active part in the management of the Association and who undertake to be liable for the sum of £1.00 in the event of the Association going into liquidation.

In future, everyone paying an annual subscription will be offered the opportunity of becoming a full member or of being a ‘Friend of the Association’. All subscribers will receive publications, newsletters, information, advice and training as formerly.

The Directors of the new company are Miles Tubb, George Hackland and Anne Munro and the Company Secretary is Heather Robertson.

Annual Subscriptions to the LMA remain -

Group Subscription...£20.00
Individual...............£10.00
Unwaged................£5.00

NEW PREMISES

In July the LMA moved to new premises at 101 St Leonard’s Street. Edinburgh. The office has a shop front and street level access. There is a back room with space for computers, desks and storage. The front ‘shop’ will be used for meetings, exhibitions and reminiscence projects.

It is hoped that, in the future, the office will be open to the public for several hours each week for recording material for the archive, group work and to stimulate interest in reminiscence and community history. At the moment access is by appointment only.

WORK IN PROGRESS

The video, ‘Memories in Song’, produced by the Multi-Media/Music Reminiscence Project, funded by North Edinburgh and Leith Local Development Committee, was presented at a function attended by over 60 people at Leith Library in May. Copies of the video can be obtained from the LMA.

A travelling exhibition of images from the archive is under construction.

Work continues on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Project. Two exhibitions were produced - one shown at Meadowbank Stonewall Fair and the other linked to Gay Pride Day. The LMA has been very fortunate to receive a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to progress this project.

GRANTS

Lloyds TSB has offered the LMA a grant, to extend over a period of 3 years, towards the cost of employing a trainer in reminiscence and community history work. This grant matches that received from the Robertson Trust last year.

Work should be in progress by June, 2004.

FUTURE PLANS

An event will be held on October 29th at St Peters Church Hall, Lutton Place. 12.30-3.30pm showing the many projects and activities in which LMA Volunteers are engaged. There will be an opportunity to meet the Volunteers and to see examples of the work in progress on the photographic archive, community history at Newhaven, the Leith Music Project, the Telling Tales Millennium Project and many others.

The ‘Gogarburn Lives’ Book has been completed and will be presented at the event by some of those who worked on its production.

The event will also mark the launch of Past, Present and Future – a video promoting reminiscence and community history work.

Heather Robertson, Volunteer Coordinator, will be on Maternity leave from the end of November. Our best wishes to Heather and we look forward to a further announcement in the spring edition of the Newsletter.

Miles Tubb will take over the role of Coordinator in Heather’s absence.
