Welcome
Members will be aware that
at an Extraordinary General Meeting held in September 2000, it was resolved
to change the structure of the LMA and to seek sustainable funding in
order to employ staff and to initiate and develop reminiscence and oral
history project work in Edinburgh.
Following the award of two
major grants in December 2000 it became possible to achieve this ambition.
The Unemployed Voluntary
Action Fund provided funding for a project to involve more volunteers
in this field and early in 2002 the post of Co-ordinator was advertised.
The committee is pleased to report that Heather Robertson was appointed
and took up her post in April.
Heather has worked for a
number of years with volunteers and the LMA already owes much to her experience
and enthusiasm.
An award from the Heritage
Lottery Fund together with the City of Edinburgh Council to
establish a new photographic archive enabled the LMA to advertise for
two members of staff to carry this out.
Miles Tubb, who has been
appointed to develop and extend the archive, has already worked in a voluntary
capacity and has a background in both photography and reminiscence and
oral history.
Colin Jubb was appointed to explore the potential uses of IT in the field.
Colin has worked with the LMA in a voluntary capacity for some time,
offering training in the use of computers in reminiscence and oral history.
In addition to the two major
awards, the LMA receives smaller grants for a number of individual projects
which will continue in 2002/03.
Several new projects are
planned and work will begin as soon as the necessary structures and funding
are in place.
The AGM was held in June
2002.
A summary of the work of the LMA to date and plans
for the future were presented to members and other interested people who
attended.
"The City Image" an Age Concern Millennium
Project was launched at the same event. David Langridge has produced an
exhibition of "Memory Maps" and a book reflecting people's experiences
of change in 3 inner city areas. These will be on display at different
city venues later.
FUTURE EVENTS
A launch of Polish Handling Boxes is to be held in
October.
The work on the boxes which has been carried out by
the Pilmeny Development Project together with the Polish Community and
Alzheimers Scotland has been sponsored by a number of agencies.
The LMA hopes to hold a training session on the use
of the boxes at the event.
