ABOUT THE LIVING MEMORY ASSOCIATION
Formed in 1984, The Living Memory Association has worked all around Edinburgh
in residential homes, community centres, lunch clubs, schools, colleges,
church groups and hospitals, talking to people about their lives and experiences.
From these memories, and from other materials, we have produced books,
magazines, displays and exhibitions. We now have a photographic archive
and have also been involved in video-making and drama projects.
In April 2002, the LMA received two major grants which enabled us to
employ staff for the first time. The Heritage Lottery Fund
has given us a three year grant to continue our work collecting photographs
for our 'picturing the past' archive. This money, combined with a City
of Edinburgh Council grant and in-kind support from Edinburgh museums
and galleries has meant we have been able to expand the project considerably.
We have purchased new computer equipment and now scan and save donated
images 'on site'.
The involvement and contribution of volunteers throughout this work
is vital to the project. Our Voluntary Action Fund
grant helps us to offer many exciting opportunities to volunteers of
all ages and backgrounds. See our Training
page for information on training opportunities.
Volunteers are always needed to help with the work of the archive. If
you can spare a few hours to help gather photographs, assist with computers
or photograpy, help with promotion, publicity, fundraising or administration,
please contact
us for information. Or come along to our oral history / reminiscence
projects to help gather valuable
information about our past.
We are also involved in other new work in the city. We have produced
a video with a music project based in Leith, and work also with the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community.
The Living Memory Association is an expanding organization and we are
keen to bring our work to all sectors of the community.
