Food and Rationing

Activities

Listen again to the audio extracts throughout this section.
How did rationing affect people in Scotland? How did people feel about rations? Give at least one example for each clip you listen to*

  • Design a poster to advertise the “Dig for Victory” campaign.
  • Imagine you are a mother or a child during the war. Write a letter to a friend describing how rationing affected you and your family. Use the information in the sound clips to give you examples.
  • Working with a partner, write a radio advert (lasting no more than 1 minute) from the government trying to make people feel good about living on rations.
  • Keep a food diary for a week – write down EVERYTHING you eat and drink. Compare it with a child's rations during WW2 using a table like this:

Child rations

My weekly rations
sugar (340g reduced to 225g)
jam/honey (450g every month)
meat (1s/2d worth = 6p)
bacon (225g reduced to 115g)
fat (lard and butter together) (225g)
milk (one tin of dried milk (4 pints) every 4 weeks)
cheese (85g reduced to 50g)
eggs (one per fortnight, plus bonus extra 12 dried eggs every 8 weeks)
tea (50g)

What would you miss most if you had to survive on WW2 rations and why? Is there anything you would like about living o n rations? Can you think of any advantages of living on these rations?

Good luck!
